The body of Christ in Lebanon

by Jim Wallis

WallisLet me first say that I affirm Israel's existence and its right to live in peace and security. Let me also say that I believe Hezbollah has provoked this current crisis. Since the Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000, Hezbollah has built a stockpile of thousands of rockets, continued attacks on Israel, and then, recently, kidnapped two Israeli soldiers.

So we start by condemning kidnapping and Hezbollah's attacks on Israeli civilians. Hezbollah is a militant organization and movement that uses terrorism, i.e., it deliberately carries out lethal violence against innocent civilians. And no matter what the grievances or injustices, deliberate violence against civilians must be universally and unequivocally condemned as what a group of Palestinian intellectuals after 9/11 called a "short path to hell." Killing innocent civilians (often families and children) is evil and must be steadfastly opposed, and in response to such ugly violence we must draw a clear line in the sand. Further, Hezbollah is an organization that does not recognize Israel's right to exist and has vowed to destroy it. So let's be clear, by kidnapping Israeli soldiers and attacking Israeli cities with rocket attacks aimed directly at civilians, Hezbollah provoked this latest war.

LOVELAND, OHIO – THIS WEEK'S LIST: ORGANIC PRODUCE AT GRAILVILLE

Vegetablesgraphic_1LOVELAND, OHIO - Freshly harvested produce grown in the certified organic gardens at Grailville can now be purchased by the public.

All of the produce is grown at Grailville by Earth-Shares CSA and is organically certified. Freshly harvested produce is put at the produce stand which is open from Thursday evening for the weekend as long as the produce lasts.

The produce stand is on the porch outside of the Milk and Honey House and the vegetables are in the two refrigerators, with prices marked. This is a self-serve system and payment is put in the cash box; it is helpful if you can bring change in the correct amount.

The Milk and Honey House is a red-brick building on the Grailville grounds and is located off the main entrance drive on the left just after the fork in the road that turns right to go to the store and office.

Here is the list for this weekend. The amounts are not exact measurements, but approximate. A lot of the items are in bags because they keep better in plastic.

  • Zuchini, cucumbers, yellow crookneck squash, and onions are $1.00 each.
  • Cabbages are 75 cents each.
  • Green beans (appr. 1 lb.), Swiss chard (appr. 1 lb.), and beets (appr. 1.5 lbs.) are $2.50 per bag.
  • Rocambole garlic -- one of our specialties -- is now for sale at assorted sizes and prices.
  • We also have Terry's special zucchine bread this week as long as quantities last for $5.00

COLUMBUS, OHIO - Eminent Domain Taking for Norwood Development Overturned

Schm0017 COLUMBUS, OHIO - In a multifaceted opinion, the Supreme Court of Ohio today clarified Ohio law on eminent domain, ruling 7-0 to reverse a Hamilton County appeals court and halt the taking of private homes by the City of Norwood to make way for a development complex. Among other findings, today's ruling: overturned as unconstitutional a portion of Ohio's eminent domain statute, established that an economic benefit to the community alone does not justify government taking of private property, and set a heightened level of scrutiny for Ohio courts to apply when considering eminent domain cases.

Justice Maureen O'Connor wrote the unanimous majority opinion that balances “two competing interests of great import in American democracy: the individual's rights in the possession and security of property, and the sovereign's power to take private property for the benefit of the community.”

In a statement from Washington, Confresswoman Jean Schmidt said, "I am delighted that the court took a stand with home owners. Forcibly taking someone's home to build a shopping complex is way outside the acceptable bounds of eminent domain. I am very excited for both the property owners involved in the case and the new protections granted by the case to all home owners.”

The highly publicized case involved a challenge by several “holdout” homeowners to the City of Norwood's eminent domain action taking possession of their property in order to make way for two new city-owned parking garages and a large, privately owned commercial development intended to create jobs and increase local tax revenues.
