Flood Safety Awareness Week: March 17-21

Floodcar The Ohio Committee for Severe Weather Awareness Encourages Ohioans to Prepare Themselves and Their Families Against Flooding

LOVELAND, OHIO NEWS – Natural hazards such as tornadoes and flooding are incidents that typically occur during the spring and summer. But as the Midwestern and Southern states have experienced at the beginning of this year, severe thunderstorms, tornadoes and massive flooding can happen at any time, any season.

In early February, heavy rains and strong winds pummeled northern Ohio, resulting in nearly 1,600 reported power outages, thousands of homes and businesses flooded, and seven counties declaring local emergencies. Three of these counties received a federal declaration in August 2007 for flooding.

The National Weather Service, a member of the Ohio Committee for Severe Weather Awareness, says that flooding is Ohio’s, and the nation’s, most costly and common natural disaster and has declared March 17-21, as Flood Safety Awareness Week. Ohio’s Spring Severe Weather Awareness Week is March 23-29, with a Statewide Tornado Drill on Wednesday, March 26 at 9:50 AM.

The Ohio Committee for Severe Weather Awareness suggests the following preparedness and mitigation measures for Ohioans to better prepare and protect themselves against flooding:

Know the Terms

  • A flood/flash flood WATCH means a flood or flash flood is possible in your area.
  • A flood/flash flood WARNING means flooding or a flash flood is already occurring or will occur in your area very soon.

Floods can take several hours to days to develop; Flash floods can take only a few minutes or hours to develop.

Listen to a NOAA Weather Radio or a local television or radio station for flood information and possible evacuation orders/instructions.

During a Flood Watch/Warning

  • When a flood WATCH is issued, move your furniture and valuables to higher floors of your home. Fill your vehicle(s) gas tanks, in case an evacuation notice is issued.
  • When a flood WARNING is issued, listen to a NOAA Weather Radio, local radio or TV stations for flood information and advice. If told to evacuate, do so as soon as possible.

Southern Baptists Back a Shift on Climate Change

A 2007 resolution passed by the convention hewed to a more skeptical view of global warming.

In contrast, the new declaration, which will be released Monday, states, “Our cautious response to these issues in the face of mounting evidence may be seen by the world as uncaring, reckless and ill-informed.”

The document also urges ministers to preach more about the environment and for all Baptists to keep an open mind about considering environmental policy.

It's governor vs. schools czar

Strickland not seeking ouster of education chief he blasted; she defends self, won't quit

By Catherine Candisky and Mark Niquette THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Superintendent Susan T. Zelman Despite criticizing the state's schools superintendent as a bad manager and a poor leader, Gov. Ted Strickland is not seeking to have her replaced.

And Superintendent Susan T. Zelman said yesterday she's not going anywhere.

The governor has no direct control over Zelman's job. But he made it publicly clear in an uncharacteristically harsh attack this week that Zelman no longer enjoys his support.

Update: Loveland Middle School grease fire

On Friday, March 14, there was a grease fire at Loveland Middle School at approximately 9 a.m.  The fire started in Room 60 during a Life Skills class where students were in the process of making fried pies in honor of “Pi Day” celebrated every year on March 14 (3.14).

All of the students are safe and no one was injured.  When the fire began, the teacher immediately sent all the students out of the room and instructed a student to pull the fire alarm.  Simultaneously, another teacher in the hallway called 911. The School Resource Officer Fred Barnes came into the room and extinguished the fire with the fire extinguisher located in the room.

All students in the Loveland Middle School and Loveland Intermediate School campus were immediately evacuated and spent 20-25 minutes outside while the fire department inspected the classrooms.  When the fire department indicated that the IntermediateSchool side was safe, they sent all of the students back into that side of the campus.  All LIS students returned to their classrooms and the LMS students were sent to the LIS gymnasium.  After the fire department determined the building was safe, the students were permitted back into their classrooms at approximately 11 a.m.

All students from the Life Skills class and the teacher were checked by paramedics and determined to be unharmed.  Parents of these students were also contacted.
