Zuch appointed to council

LOVELAND, OHIO – Brenton Zuch was appointed by council on Tuesday night to fill the seat vacated by Dan Daly, who resigned, announcing his move to Pittsburgh.

In his cover letter to council seeking the appointment Zuch said, “If you want to understand the inter-workings of an organization, follow the money.” He is a current member of the City Finance Committee, and cited his work on the city budget as giving him “insight into the policies and issues of the City of Loveland.”

Zuch said he grew up in the City, graduated from Loveland High School, and moved back here to raise a family on Pheasant Hills Drive. He is a Navy veteran, worked for the Ohio General Assembly as a Legislative Aid, and the Ohio School Facilities Commission. He currently works as a production manager for Western Ohio Mortgage Corporation.

Foreclosure Phil

(Here is a short primer to help understand how the subprime mortgage crisis happened, and what led to the "biggest financial catastrophe of our time.")

Years before Phil Gramm was a McCain campaign adviser and a lobbyist for a Swiss bank at the center of the housing credit crisis, he pulled a sly maneuver in the Senate that helped create today's subprime meltdown. By David Corn

It's like bookies trading bets, with banks and hedge funds gambling on whether an investment (say, a pile of subprime mortgages bundled into a security) will succeed or fail.

Because of the swap-related provisions of Gramm's bill—which were supported by Fed chairman Alan Greenspan and Treasury secretary Larry Summers—a $62 trillion market (nearly four times the size of the entire US stock market) remained utterly unregulated, meaning no one made sure the banks and hedge funds had the assets to cover the losses they guaranteed.

Donations Needed for American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Loveland

Relayforlife LOVELAND, OHIO – The American Cancer Society, the nation’s leading voluntary health organization, is looking for a few good volunteers for its national signature activity, Relay For Life. “Walkers and runners, cancer survivors, community leaders, team captains – come one, come all, to the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Loveland on June 6-7,” said  the appreciation committee chairperson, Kelli Rich.

Relay For Life is an 18 hour event that brings together teams from local businesses, schools, churches and families for fun, food, music, entertainment and a night under the stars, while team members take turns walking or running on the Loveland High School track.

“Relay For Life is as much an awareness raiser about the progress against cancer as it is a fund-raiser,” said Rich. “Individuals who are willing to give their time and energy to this exciting event, as a volunteer or participant, have  made a commitment to fight back against this disease.”

The local committee is looking to local businesses to consider our event for an in-kind donation (gift card, service, or item). The donations will be used to motivate participants to stay on the track the full 18 hours and/or to use as part of a raffle to raise even more money for the cause. If you are willing to make a donation or contribution, please contact Kelli Rich at richk@mason.k12.oh.us.

For information about Relay For Life or about cancer, call toll-free anytime (1-888-227-6446 X 4212) or visit the American Cancer Society's Web site for the Loveland relay at: www.events.cancer.org/rfllovelandoh.

Ohio House panel advances gun-carry bill

Law-enforcement groups at odds with NRA

By Jim Siegel THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

A bill that gun advocates say will help clarify how people are able to carry guns in their vehicles passed a House committee yesterday despite objections from county prosecutors and most law-enforcement groups.

Concerned about safety, groups representing Ohio police chiefs, county sheriffs and police officers remain opposed to the National Rifle Association-backed bill that would allow anyone who can lawfully own a gun to carry it in a vehicle. The gun must be unloaded, but law enforcement is worried because, under Senate Bill 184, the gun would be in an unlocked case and the ammunition could be stored nearby. Read on... Loveland needs to lighten up

Dear Loveland Magazine,

I used to live in Loveland, and then I moved away. Why?

Loveland Ohio, a town best known for its name. That about says it. Just about the only cool things in town are Grailville, because there are a few acres that don't have houses built on them, and the buZZThru coffee shop.

The town of Loveland needs to lighten up. Sorry to be a downer, but I had just been reading about this garbage with the shooting range and the basketball hoops , and it just disgusts me.

Lovelands' overgrown police budget still makes me sick just to think of it, but i won't go into detail with that. The fact is, the main action of the Loveland local government is to try their best to make everyone shake with fear - to get the citizens to be more afraid of anything that they can be made afraid of. Every act of the Loveland government seems to just constrict against anyone doing anything the least bit interesting. Everything has to have endless permits and censorship. It reflects a closed-minded attitude.

How hard would it be to spend a little more time and money getting art, maybe some live music, anything for the people, and not against them. It is ridiculous.

I understand that this comment will probably not be allowed into the website, as it may be perceived as threatening to the local powers that be, but hey- I tried. If this comment makes it in full up on the site, I will be hereby amazed at a leap of open-mindedness capable of accepting dissent.

I still love you Loveland. I have no good reason why, but I do. I just wish - it sure would be nice if the city would, just a teeny bit... evolve.

Ben Boyarko,
