Loveland High School beats Granville 12-11
LOVELAND, OHIO - A game that began in sweltering, stifling 90-degree heat, ended in a red hot Division II final-four win for the Loveland Tiger Lacrosse team on Thursday. The game had been postponed from Wednesday because of severe weather, but field conditions were excellent for the showdown against visiting, #1 seed, Granville Blue Aces.
Loveland plays University School at on Saturday, June 7. The game is at Dublin Coffman High School at 2 PM. (Directions)
University School advanced into the State Championship game by beating Solon High School 8-6 on Wednesday, and is the #1 seed in Region 1 and 2. Loveland is seeded #2 in the 3 and 4 Region. University School (15-4) is a private independent boys high school in Hunting Valley, north of Shaker Heights, in northern Ohio.
After the victory, Loveland Head Coach Mike Werner gathered his team on the sideline. He said, “This was a little but uglier than we wanted, it was hot, it was miserable. But, hey guys, we're going to State.”
Granville scored two goals, and led Loveland 2-0 after the first quarter, but Loveland went into the locker room at the half only down 1, after scoring 3 goals to Granville's 2 in the second half.
The Tigers stormed out of the locker room with a clear message to the Blue Aces, scoring two quick goals and a total of six for the third quarter, vs. 2 for Granville. Loveland led 9-6 going into the final quarter. Granville proved tough for the Tigers to finish off in a game that seemed assured late in the game of sending the home team to the State Championship. Granville scored 5 more times, taking the game within one point with under three minutes to go.
Werner told his team, “It doesn't get any better than this.” Talking about playing University School in the finals on Saturday, he said, “Think about the Collegiate school we played in Louisville – on steroids.” He said they use a lot of ball control and have a lot of field experience. “We're rated number 2 in the State of Ohio - they're rated number 1. But guys, your A-Game, beats University School.”
After the game, Granville Head Coach, Kurt Hansen said, “It was a very good game. When you get two very good teams together and if you make a mistake, the other team takes advantage of it, and that's exactly what happened. We made a mistake, and 'boom' Loveland took advantage of it. He said he was not talking about one particular mistake, but mistakes throughout the game. “Loveland is good enough, and they have enough experience that when we made mistakes, they took advantage of it.” Hansen said he thought his team took advantage of a few of Loveland's mistakes also, “but apparently they did a better job at that, and that's what it boils down to.”
Speaking about the end of the game Hansen said, Yea, we closed it. These boys never quit, but I've come to expect that from them.”
Loveland's Werner finished his post-game pep talk by saying,“ Guys, great job, enjoy this. I am proud to be part of this team. The second half you turned it on, but we are not done yet; we have one more game.”
