LOVELAND, OHIO – A mid-sized excavator and its trailer ended up on its side at Loveland's five-points intersection (Broadway and Second Street) on Friday during evening rush hour. The driver said that as he was coming down the Broadway hill and halfway into a right hand turn towards the Loveland Fire House a vehicle entering the roadway ahead caused him to hit his brakes just as the wheels of his trailer went up over the curb. He said the combination of events caused the balance of the trailer to shift, turning it on its side. The truck, trailer, and excavator continued to slide 100 feet further down the roadway. No one was injured.
Loveland Symmes Firefighters responded and controlled leaking diesel fuel from entering storm water drains with the help of local businessman Ron Rolke, owner of Rolke Brothers Supply Company. Rolke had his employees immediately bring bales of hay from his store to soak up the diesel and block storm drains. Later, using the company forklift, the employees helped pry off storm drain covers, and delivered sacks of oil absorbent material from the store's inventory.
Many neighbors of the recently revamped intersection watched the cleanup and debated the much touted $847,000.00 “improvement”; pondering its safety and predicting more troubles ahead especially during icy winter conditions. One wondered why the turn lane was engineered with such a sharp radius, considering so much land being cleared for the project.
In a sort of “do as I say, not as I do” statement, the driver of the truck said that he has had safety concerns about the intersection and instructed his employees to no longer use the intersection.
