As of July 2, Ohio has expanded the Homestead Exemption for property taxes, and is now available to all Ohio homeowners, regardless of income, who are either age 65 or older or permanently and totally disabled.
Hamilton County Auditor, Dusty Rhodes says homeowners can get all the details and an application form by visiting their Homestead Page, or by calling their Homestead Division at (513) 946-4099 Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Rhodes said, “Phone lines are very busy and we do appreciate your patience.”
When you are ready to file, mail your application to: Hamilton County Auditor Dusty Rhodes, Homestead Division, 138 E. Court Street, Room 310, Cincinnati, Ohio 45202. Rhodes says to be sure to include proof of age if you are 65 or older, such as a photocopy of your driver’s license, state ID or birth certificate. Or, if you are disabled, include a letter certifying your disability from a state or federal agency or have your physician complete the back side of the application.
Warren County Auiditor, Nick Nelson says, “The new and expanded Homestead Exemption program will lower residential property tax bills for all seniors and qualifying disabled individuals.”
The new program is open to any Ohio homeowner who currently lives in their home and that home is their primary residence, and who:
- Is at least 65 years old or will reach age 65 during the current tax year; or
- Is certified totally and permanently disabled as of January 1 of the current tax year, regardless of age; or
- Is the surviving spouse of a qualified homeowner, and who was at least 59 years old on the date of their spouse’s death.
Eligible homeowners may now apply for the new Homestead Exemption program. Applications must be received by October 1, 2007 in order to receive savings on tax bills payable in 2008. Click here for the application from Warren County.
Nelson says that homeowners who currently receive the Homestead Exemption will automatically qualify for the new homestead exemption and do not have to reapply.
