Little Miami Local Schools is pleased to announce Shaun Bevan as the new district treasurer.
"Mr. Bevan's experience and vision are very complementary to Little Miami," said Board President Nona Cress. "The Board is confident he will balance fiscal stewardship with the district's central mission of providing an excellent education to our students."
Former treasurer Robert Giuffré resigned effective July 16 to begin his new position as Chief Financial Officer for the Great Oaks vocational school district. He will serve as interim treasurer until Mr. Bevan begins August 13.
Mr. Bevan has experience in Assurance and Advisory Business Services with an international accounting firm and as the Chief Financial Officer for another public school district. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Accountancy and Finance from Miami University.
"As a life-long resident in the area, I am well acquainted with Little Miami's outstanding reputation," said Mr. Bevan. "I am excited about the opportunity to lead the district through the construction process and to a new standard of excellence."
His goals include helping the district continue to achieve excellence and provide the best education possible, while being efficient with taxpayer dollars; quickly coming up to speed with the construction projects and seeing them through to completion; and establishing good working relationships with all the great staff of Little Miami Schools.
Prior to joining Little Miami, Mr. Bevan served as treasurer for the Clinton-Massie Local School District. While there, he managed the financial components for two different construction projects totaling $50 million. Mr. Bevan also has been a CPA with the prestigious accounting firm Ernst & Young in their Dayton office. He is a member of both the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Ohio Association of School Business Officials, and he is the treasurer of the Ohio Valley Chapter of OASBO.
"I am happy to be a part of the Little Miami family, and I look forward to utilizing my experiences to help the district continue along the path of excellence," he said.
Mr. Bevan, a graduate of Clinton-Massie High School, resides in Lebanon with his wife Jill and their children Ellie, Gabby and Sam.
The Board of Education has been proactive in helping alleviate the tax burden on Little Miami homeowners and has approved a plan of finance to stretch the budget, keep within the five-year forecast and stay off the ballot longer.
"Our goal has been to look at creative options to stretch our operating budget and to keep Little Miami Schools off the ballot longer, even though we are experiencing historically high student population growth in a slowing economy," said Superintendent Dan Bennett.
These measures have included discontinuing collection of the emergency operating levy one year early, converting 3 inside mills for permanent improvement and increasing operating money from the state instead of through a local property tax. Additionally, the district implemented a new high-deductible health insurance plan for teachers with a 39 percent reduction in premiums, and restructured transportation to reduce expenditures.
The district consistently has received awards for excellence in financial reporting from both the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada and the Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO). It also has been honored for excellence in the preparation and issuance of a high-quality Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) by the Auditor of State. These prestigious financial reporting awards are only conferred to school systems whose financial operations have met or exceeded rigorous standards established by these professional organizations.
