SAN FRANCISCO — Bjorn Sandberg and Scott Schlesner live 2,000 miles apart and have never talked, yet they could tell each other's stories of anguish and fear in details that would unnerve any parent of a youth baseball pitcher.

They've each had a son on the verge of dying after being struck on the head by a batted ball and suffering a skull fracture that required emergency surgery. Read on...
