Loveland Presbyterian has new pastor and choir director

Rev. Dr. Lonnie Darnell is the new pastor at Loveland Presbyterian

Loveland Presbyterian Church is looking forward with excitement for the New Year. We welcomed our new Choir Director, Randy Pennington and his family in recent months. He is a Professor of Music at NKU and brought new enthusiasm to the Choir. His wife Suzanne and sons Brock and Keith have joined the choir. 

We also welcomed our new Pastor, Reverend Dr. Lonnie Darnell and his wife Melody in January. Please join us on February 2nd for his first sermon and he is looking forward  to meeting his new Congregation and community. We're looking forward to many great years ahead!

The students at Children's Meeting House Montessori School recently were delighted by a production of a classic children's fairy tale told from the perspective of the wolf.  The children were entertained as the Big Bad Wolf gave his side of the story in the Illusion Factory's production of "The Untold Story of the Three Little Pigs." 

 

During this highly interactive production, the students joined forces with the reporter, Random Adjective, investigating what really happened to the little pigs and the wolf using the five W's and one H (who, what, where, when, why, and how) to uncover the truth.  Students were filled with wonder and were engaged by the lively dialogue,  physical comedy, and colorful costumes of the production.  The Illusion Factory has been delighting students in Ohio since 1991 and more information can be found at www.theillusionfactory.org.

Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk

The Super Bowl is one of America’s most highly anticipated sports events, when friends and family gather in homes, bars and restaurants to celebrate. As Super Bowl Sunday approaches, Clermont County Safe Communities reminds you to designate a sober driver on game day because Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), along with the National Football League (NFL) and Techniques for Effective Alcohol Management (TEAM) Coalition, have joined forces with Clermont County’s local highway safety and law enforcement officials to spread the message about designating a sober driver on Super Bowl Sunday.

In 2011, 9,878 people were killed in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes, according to NHTSA. These crashes were 31 percent more likely to occur on weekends (defined as Friday at 6 p.m. to Monday at 5:59 a.m.) than on weekdays.
 
Whether attending the game, watching at a bar or hosting a party, NHTSA, TEAM Coalition, the NFL and Clermont County Safe Communities remind everyone that Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk. Before choosing to drink, choose your team’s MVP – a sober designated driver. NHTSA offers these additional safety tips…

If you’re attending a Super Bowl party or watching the game at a bar or restaurant, designate your sober driver or plan another way to get home safely before the party begins.
If you don’t have a designated driver, ask a sober friend for a ride home or call a cab, friend or family member to come and get you.

Never let friends drive if they have had too much to drink.  

If you’re hosting a Super Bowl party:

• Make sure all your guests designate a sober driver in advance or arrange for alternate transportation to ensure they get home safely.
• Serve food and include non-alcoholic beverages at the party.
• Stop serving alcohol at the end of the third quarter of the game.
• Keep the numbers for local cab companies handy, and take the keys away from anyone who has had too much to drink.

And remember, your seat belt is always your best defense against a drunk driver in a crash.

A premiere performance by Loveland Middle School Jazz Band

 

LMS Jazz Band ONLY middle school jazz band selected to perform at OMEA Conference in Columbus

 

The Ohio Music Educators Association (OMEA) Conference is in for a treat; the 26 members of the Loveland Middle School (LMS) Jazz Band will serenade the audience at the upcoming state-wide event – the only middle school jazz band selected to perform at the prestigious gathering.

“This is the third time our LMS Jazz Band has had this honor, and we couldn’t be more thrilled for the students who worked so hard to earn this recognition,” said Chris Burke, LMS principal. “This is a reflection of the richness of our musical arts department and the tireless, talented effort of Teacher Bruce Maegly.”

“It is a great honor to be selected and front a group before your peers,” said Maegly. “This event is attended by experienced ‘listeners’ who are able to catch most of the errors that might occur in a performance.

“The band will put in many extra hours above and beyond our normal rehearsal schedule. They have worked diligently to prepare themselves for this conference, and I am confident they will represent both our school and community to the best of their ability.”

The LMS Jazz Band performs before the OMEA Conference 3:45 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, in the ballroom of the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Columbus, Ohio. The theme of the conference is “Building the Future of Music Education.”

 

Ohio Private Pesticide Applicator Recertification

 

OSU Extension Clermont County is hosting two pesticide recertification updates for 2014.  This training is for private applicator producers currently possessing licenses to expire in 2014 or would like to accrue hours toward their next recertification.  Trainings will be held on Feb. 4, 2014 and March 18, 2014.  

Miami Township, Milford and Loveland Police partner with crime map

 

 

The Miami Township, Milford and Loveland Police Departments recently partnered with each other and BAIR Analytics Inc. to provide a new way for the public to stay informed about crime in all three communities. The Police Departments now have online crime maps called RAIDS Online (www.raidsonline.com) that maps and analyzes crime data, alerts citizens about crimes in their area, and allows the Police Departments to quickly alert the public about crimes as they occur.

Milford Police Chief Jamey Mills said, “RAIDS Online is our newest tool to help inform and educate residents about police activity and crime in their neighborhood and it fits right in with our Community and Problem Oriented Policing strategies.”

Citizens can view a map and grid with all of the crimes in their area, sign up for neighborhood watch reports and submit an anonymous tip about a crime directly to their law enforcement agency. RAIDS Online automatically syncs with the records systems of each department to keep crime information updated online and in the mobile app. RAIDS Online displays all of the incidents on a map, grid and analytics dashboard along with some basic information about the incidents.

“All three Police Departments’ participation in RAIDS Online highlights their commitment to proactive communication with the public they serve,” said Sean Bair, founder of BAIR Analytics. “We’re excited to partner with them to provide this free service for their public.”

“This will be a great partnership in gathering and sharing reported crimes with the public and other police agencies. The ability to see the types of crimes that have occurred in your neighborhood on a map and to easily provide an anonymous tip is invaluable. We are currently working with other law enforcement agencies to expand this free mapping service,” said Miami Township Police Chief Sue Madsen.

Miami Township Police reached out to neighboring community police agencies with the idea to collect, analyze and share crime data. An officer with Miami Township will analyze the data and create intelligence reports that will be shared with neighboring police agencies.

“The sharing of information is key to helping us do our jobs more efficiently and effectively,” said Loveland Police Chief Tim Sabransky. “We already share a records management system with Milford and this new sharing opportunity just seemed to be a logical next step. We also look forward to working with other nearby police departments.”

“This actually started as a challenge to the staff on the January 17 professional development day,” explained Keith Koehne, assistant superintendent of human resources. “I was looking for a way for the entire staff to share their professional development experiences with each other; collaboration was the goal, and it was achieved! We had so many teachers engaged we decided to keep the momentum we achieved that day going.”

This will give the entire Tiger Family an opportunity to experience the academic conversation happening at Loveland like cool class projects and spectacular student achievement. Teachers will also share great articles they are reading and work by their colleagues.

2014 inductees into Loveland High School Athletic Hall of Fame

 

 

Loveland, Oh. On December 13, three former athletes and a former coach were inducted into the Loveland High School Hall of Fame. Lauren Beechy-Spencer, Charlie Carpenter, Bob Fuson, Jr., and Roger Muething.

Lauren Beechy-Spencer could not attend the ceremony because it was the night of her sister’s wedding. A 2007 LHS graduate, she played soccer and ran cross country her junior and senior years. She was Loveland’s MVP, first team FAVC both years in soccer, and FAVC player of the year as a Senior. She was All Southwest District soccer team both years, and the player of the year as a Senior. She was also named the Enquirer soccer player of the year as a Senior and 1st Team All State. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America named her to a All Region team. She was named a Scholar All-America and Soccer All American while a Tiger. She played for Ohio Premier teams that won six state cup champions and U-17 regional semifinals.

While at Ohio State she was named to the Second Team of the College Sports Information Directors of America, and ESPN’s Academic All-District women's soccer team. She was also named an OSU Scholar-Athlete and a “Academic All-Big Ten”. She was a three time winner of the  Elisa S. Hamilton award while playing soccer at Ohio State,

Lauren is the only “True” All American from LHS in any sport, according to Kevin Taylor, Loveland’s Assistant Athletic Director. While at LHS he was a First Team FAVC cross-country runner her junior year and placed 33rd at the State cross-country meet that year.

At present Lauren resides in Columbus with her husband. Beechy will be awarded her plaque and honored at Loveland High School at a later date.

Charlie Carpenter attended Loveland High School from 1964 to 1968. While at Loveland, he played 3 years of varsity baseball and 4 years of varsity basketball. He also played 4 years of varsity football and team captain both his Junior and Senior years. He won the Claw Man Award his Sophomore, Junior and Senior years. He also won the Tiger Man Award for Most Valuable Player both his Junior and Senior years. Carpenter was 1st Team All EHL his Sophomore, Junior and Senior years. He was the first sophomore ever named to 1st Team All EHL. Carpenter was All District his Junior. and Senior years and All City his Junior and Senior years. He was an Honorable Mention Cincinnati Post/Enquirer All Star as a Sophomore and was 1st Team Offense Cincinnati Post/Enquirer All Star both his Junior and Senior years. Carpenter attended Murray State University where he played 4 years of football. He is currently employed as an assistant football coach at Bethany College in Kansas. He resides in Loveland during the off season with his wife Vickie and enjoys spending time with his son and daughter, their spouses and 5 grandchildren

Bob Fuson, Jr. graduated from Loveland High School in 1977. He played football his Sophomore, Junior and Senior years. He was Team Captain his Senior year, Claw Man his Junior and Senior years and Tiger Man, which was Most Valuable Player his Senior year. Fuson was Honorable Mention All-EHL both his Junior and Senior years. He also played baseball during his Sophomore, Junior and Senior years where he was 1st Team All- EHL his Sophomore, Junior and Senior years, All City Cincinnati Post his Sophomore, Junior and Senior years. and All City Cincinnati Enquirer his Junior and Senior years. Fuson Played in the East West All Star game his Senior year. He attended Motlow State and Middle Tennessee State  where he played baseball. Fuson now resides in Loveland with his wife Felicia.

Coach Roger Muething received the Hall of Fame “Athletic Achievement Award” for his 30 years of coaching at Loveland High School from 1969 to 1999. While at Loveland he coached as an assistant varsity football coach for 8 years, 7 years as defensive coordinator, head JV football coach for  2 years, JV assistant for 2 years and Freshman football coach for 2 years. Muething coached JV baseball for 2 years and Freshman basketball for 4 years. He also coached as an Assistant Varsity Basketball coach for 1 year for an undefeated team.  Muething coached varsity golf for 12 years where he coached the EHL Player of the Year in ’93 and ’94. His team was EHL Champs in ’94 and had an Individual  State Qualifier in ’94. Again in ’96 his team was SBC Champs and had another Individual State Qualifier. Muething was EHL and City Golf Coach of the Year in 1994. He also served as Loveland’ s athletic director from 1979 through 1983. During this time Loveland had a State Qualifier in Swimming in 1981, 1982 and 1983. Muething retired from Loveland in 1999 and presently lives in Sycamore Township. He has one daughter Pam, son-in-law Mike, and three grandchildren, Jack, Emma and Hannah.

The Loveland City School District will operate on a 90-minute delay Wednesday, Jan. 29, due to weather conditions. Please note that the morning classes of preschool and kindergarten will still meet for a shortened session with a start time of 10:30 a.m. and the usual dismissal time. Afternoon preschool and kindergarten will be held on the usual schedule.

Mayor Cox: Your suggestions and views are important to me

As I approach my second month as mayor of Loveland, I want to thank the voters for electing me, as well as my colleagues on City council and City staff for their support and the confidence they have placed in me.

I have enjoyed the ceremonial mayoral duties including officiating at parades and ribbon cuttings, performing weddings, and presenting the key to the City to the Loveland Tigers for the state football championship.

I look forward to working with council and the community to address important issues facing our City including economic development, the budget, and maintenance of basic City services.  

Although things are going well for our City, over the next year we will have to make some tough decisions.  For example, in May we will ask voters to approve a levy to continue the City’s contract with the Loveland Symmes Fire Department and to maintain our excellent fire and paramedic services.

On January 18^th City council and staff met for a full day strategy session led by Interim City Manager Dave Duckworth.  We identified the major opportunities and challenges facing the City and initiated discussions to address these challenges and capitalize on our opportunities.

 Another task of the mayor is to appoint members to the various committees of council. I want to thank those who agreed to continue serving, as well as the new volunteers who are stepping up to serve the City.  I will soon be appointing a Public Relations and Communications Committee. There are so many positive things going on in Loveland, and it is important that we tell our story to our residents and businesses as well as the general public.

Loveland Magazine enters the Great Amaryllis Race

 

Amarillo Armadillo and Amaryllis Galarraga haven't got off to a great start, but Mulvey and Lutz promise intense competition in the media division of the Great Amaryllis Race

 

Loveland, Oh. - The annual Granny’s Garden School Great Amaryllis Race brightens dreary winter days across the Tristate with brilliantly colored amaryllis blooms as participants compete for various awards, including most amazing name, tallest stem, longest leaf and first blooming amaryllis.

Loveland Magazine has entered the contest, competing with the new Loveland Herald reporter, Marika Lee and Loveland resident and WLWT meteorologist, Randi Rico.

Competing for Loveland Magazine in the new "Media" category established this year is Loveland Magazine Sports Director Ricky Mulvey, Loveland Magazine Sports Reporter Willie Lutz, and Lead Frog Team Investigator Helen Davidson. Mulvey has named his plant, "Amarillo Armadillo". Lutz chose the "near perfect" name, "Amaryllis Galarraga" after the famous Armando. Davidson, leading the Loveland Magazine investigation and hopefully separating fact from fiction of the legend of the Loveland Frog believes "River Song" is a winning name. She's apparently been listening to frogs singing along the Little Miami.

Rico named her amaryllis, Blue. Lee's bulb is the creative, Ameryllis Streep.

It may seem obvious that meteorologist, Rico would have an advantage in the media competition, knowing temperature and sunshine forecasts and knowing just when to put "Blue" in the sunshine window, but don't underestimate the utterly competicious sports team of Mulvey and Lutz. They have chosen a more race car or Rosie Red race around the bases at Great American attitude. And, rumor is that Davidson has concocted a magic frog poo compost.

No one is wishing Lee's Ameryllis Streep ill fortune, but Meryl starred in "Death Becomes Her" in 1992. Official rules will allow creative feeding of Ameryllis Streep, so Lee may be watching "Julie & Julia" and cooking up a surprise.

Students in 51 classrooms at Loveland Elementary and Primary Schools, local organizations and businesses, and area homeschool families are competing. Participants compete for various awards, including most amazing name, tallest stem, longest leaf and first blooming amaryllis.

Participants received a complete amaryllis growing kit from Granny’s Garden School. For participating classrooms and homeschool students, Granny’s Garden School and class coordinators present complete grade-appropriate lesson plans for the race, which include connections to the Ohio State Standards in science and math. Students draw on their knowledge about plant and bulb parts and processes learned during the fall season to form hypotheses, answer questions and form conclusions from their observations.

Three other schools in the area have joined Granny’s Garden School in holding races this year: Brookwood Elementary in Hamilton, Rothenberg Rooftop Garden in Over-the-Rhine and Stewart Elementary in the Princeton School District.

Students will visit local businesses and organizations to compare the amaryllis plants on display with the ones they’re growing in the classroom.  Local companies and organizations participating in this year’s Great Amaryllis Race include: Accounting Plus, Prodigy Preschool, Berri Eyecare, Hospodar Insurance Agency, The Goddard School, KinderCare, Cincinnati Public Library – Loveland Branch, Take Home Tano, iCue Learning, the Loveland Area Chamber of Commerce, Youthland Academy and Hyperdrive.

Due to the extreme cold and wind chill predicted throughout the day, Milford Schools will be CLOSED on Tuesday, January 28. Blizzard Bag #2 will be posted by 8 a.m. tomorrow morning on the website, Schoology, and/or ProgressBook.

For those students in K-6 enrolled in our Extended Day program, it will open tomorrow, January 28, beginning at 8 a.m. at the Route 28 location only.

Loveland Early Childhood Center Kindergarten enrollment

 

Loveland, Oh. - Loveland Early Childhood Center (LECC) enrollment packets for the 2014-15 school year will be available beginning Monday, March 3. Packets will be available for pickup at the school office from 9 AM to 3:30 PM.

The following information is required at the time of packet pickup: student name, address, county of residence, phone number and the name of the person receiving the packet. Friends or family may pick up a packet for you; however, they will need the information as noted above.

2014 Commemorative Valentine Card by Debbie Hall

Debbie Hall won the 2014 Loveland Chamber Valentine design contest. The card is available at many locations aroune town.

Loveland, Oh. - The Valentine Program of the Loveland Area Chamber of Commerce began in 1972 and has grown over the years to include a variety of Valentine activities in the community, as well as a nationally known cachet stamping and postmark program. Valentines are hand-stamped with a unique cachet, which is modeled after each year's winning card, and then hand-cancelled with a special Loveland, Ohio, postmark.  

Evey year, thousands of cards are mailed from Loveland, Ohio to all 50 states and many foreign countries.

The commemorative 2014, Loveland Valentine Card disigned by Debbie Hall, can be purchased at the Chamber office, and at their "stamping table" at the Loveland Post Office.

The cards designed by Hall can also be purchased at Loveland Kroger, Pizazz Studio, The UPS Store, Union Savings Bank, Loveland Health Care Center, Greater Loveland Historical Society Museum, LCNB, The Lodge Retirement Community, and Vintage Market.

To send any of your Valentine cards with the romantic cachet stamp and the Loveland postmark, prepare your cards, affixing proper postage, the addressee and your return address, and include them in a larger envelope addressed to:

Ohio Liquor sales reached $898 million in 2013

 

The Ohio Department of Commerce, Division of Liquor Control (Division), announced that dollar sales of spirituous liquor reached a record level in 2013, totaling $898 million. This was an increase of 5.8 %, exceeding last year’s total by $49 million.

“Ohioans continue to trade up buying more of the premium products as consumer tastes become more sophisticated,” said Bruce Stevenson, Superintendent of the Division.  “Quality customer service and better inventory management are the main ingredients that resulted in record dollar sales without encouraging increased consumption.”

Retail dollar sales were strong in 2013 totaling $635, an increase of 7.35%. Wholesale dollar sales (liquor purchased by retail permit holders such as restaurants, bars and clubs) also showed strong growth totaling $264 million, an increase of 2.5%.

Dollar sales grew at a higher rate than consumption in 2013. The Division sold a total of 12 million gallons of spirituous liquor through its 466 Contract Liquor Agencies, an increase of only 3% over the previous year.

The following were the top 10 selling brands of spirituous liquor in Ohio for 2013 (by gallons sold):

1. Jack Daniels Tennessee Whiskey – 351,125 gallons

2. Kamchatka Vodka – 294,168 gallons

3. Crown Royal Canadian Whiskey – 286,451 gallons

4. Captain Morgan Spiced Rum – 283,000 gallons

5. Absolut Vodka – 277,729 gallons

6. Bacardi Superior Light Rum – 276,365 gallons

7. Smirnoff Vodka – 266,801 gallons

8. Jagermeister – 247,078 gallons

9. Black Velvet Canadian Whiskey – 230,164 gallons

10. Korski Vodka – 222,357 gallons

(Spirituous liquor is intoxicating liquor containing more than 21% alcohol by volume.)

 

Preventing injuries in our student athletes

Youth athletics have exploded over the years with the advent of select, AAU and Junior Olympic level play. When I was a kid, I played three sports a year and had the summer to strength train for the next year. Currently, if a child wants to excel at a sport we see them participating in the same sport almost all-year round with little to no break.

In my own household, I have two very active daughters who play multiple sports at school and advanced levels. As parents, we try to find the balance between having our athletes compete at the highest level they are capable of, and also preventing them from getting injured. When a child is injured, it becomes very frustrating for the athletes, parents, coaches, and others involved, not being able to be on the court, field, pool etc. It is at that point when parents tend to do anything possible to get the athlete rehabilitated and back in their activity.

As a Chiropractor, I think the piece we are missing is enforcing more preventative preparation. We will spend as much time and money as we can afford to get the young athlete back to top form, but when it comes to prevention, we tend to think, “If it isn’t broken then don’t fix it”. When it comes to high-level youth sports injuries, it is not a matter of “if” but “when,” most of the time.

In my practice, I am seeing more and more overuse injuries. Adding these practices listed below can prevent such injuries:

Flexibility: The majority of young athletes take very little time to warm up or stretch on their own or as a team. When they arrive in my office and I test them for range of motion, they are so limited that they were predestined to these types of injuries. Yoga is a great way to start flexibility and have fun in the process. Getting a team or a group together in a yoga class would be a great bonding experience for athletes, while improving their flexibility.

Strength: As a child enters adolescence, it is a good time to start some strength and conditioning exercises. For the pre-pubescent athlete, body weight exercises such as push-ups, air squats, and calestitics are a great way to increase strength without putting stress on the maturing growth plates. As the child matures through puberty, weight training can begin by starting lightly with bands and dumbbells, then gradually working their way up, as they are able to handle more weight. As the athletes progress into their later teens, functional exercises are a really important way to tie in multi-joint movements for the given sport. It is extremely important that a professional supervises the young athletes while going through the different stages of training.

Chiropractic care: The wear and tear on joints can be a major cause of acute injuries in youth athletes. Additionally, joint wear and tear seems to show up in my office in the aging population that were heavily involved athletics in their youth, at a higher rate than some other populations. Sports, much like car accidents, can cause an imbalance of the alignment of our joints. This, in turn, can cause the early degenerative changes in them. Getting Chiropractic care as a preventative measure can help protect athletes by preventing the body from putting the joints and ligaments into an improper position. This will also take the strain off the tendons and muscles, preventing them from working harder and keeping the joints protected.

Delaney Grace Walker from Loveland named Ohio JDRF Youth Ambassador

 

The Southwest Ohio JDRF Chapter Welcomes New Youth Ambassador

The Southwest Ohio Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) has selected Delaney Grace Walker from Loveland, Ohio, to be a member of the JDRF Youth Ambassador Program. Walker not only has to overcome the struggles of having type 1 diabetes but goes above and beyond by being a committed partner to JDRF and their outreach programs. “Walker’s positive outlook and over 20 hours of community outreach service makes JDRF proud to name her as one of the 18 chosen to be a Youth Ambassador.”

Walker is in 9th grade at Loveland High School. She has been living with type 1 diabetes since being diagnosed at the age of 4. When asked about living with diabetes,she said, “I have lived with diabetes for 10 years now and I'm only 14.  Type 1 diabetes is a part of me and "my normal".  I always pray for a cure so that I can go back to actual normal and not have to constantly worry about carbs, blood sugar, and changing infusion sites.”

The Youth Ambassador Program was created to empower children with type one diabetes by giving them the opportunity to provide diabetes education to the public while helping JDRF and Southwest Ohio Chapter by representing the organization and providing diabetes awareness.

Walker will be providing health education throughout the community to raise support and awareness of type 1 diabetes. She may speak to businesses, schools, and hospitals, as well as participate in JDRF sanctioned outreach events. The Youth Ambassadors have a positive outlook on life and diabetes, and also play key roles in the Walk to Cure Diabetes, The Cincinnatians of the Year Gala and Dayton’s Summer Soiree. Other requirements for Youth Ambassadors are to write personal thank you letters to JDRF’s sponsors and donors.

The sounds of Loveland Elementary School’s Mallet Madness set the tone for the evening – upbeat. At the Loveland City School District the atmosphere is one of excitement about a past we can be proud of, a present that provides excellent education for our more than 4,700 exceptional students and a future of moving the district forward.

I had the pleasure of presenting the annual State of the Schools address to our Tiger Family Wednesday, Jan. 15, along with Treasurer/CFO Brett Griffith. It was an opportunity to share about the abundance of opportunities our students have in academics, arts, athletics and community service. It was an opportunity to show our investors how the district has maintained a fiscally conservative approach to management. It was an opportunity to engage our stakeholders in my vision for the direction we intend to take the district – developing critical, creative thinkers who will have increased access to science, technology, engineering and math to prepare them for success after high school graduation.

I am upbeat about the state of our school district.

A show choir that captured a national championship trophy; a football team that brought home a state championship title; a high school that just this year congratulated 50 students recognized as AP Scholars and three seniors named as National Merit Scholars.

Excellence – at Loveland City Schools it’s the way we do business.

On behalf of the Loveland Board of Education, I want to thank each and every member of the Loveland City School District for supporting the teachers, staff and – most of all – the more than 4,700 exceptional students who call themselves Tigers.

The Board takes pride in all this group has accomplished; we also – unanimously – feel it is time to move the district forward.

January 21 the Board voted for a resolution to place a 5.6 mill operating levy on the May ballot for your consideration (the equivalent of $196.00 annually per $100,000 home valuation). The 5.6 mills would generate an additional $4,222,401 amount of revenue per year for the district.

The district’s last levy was passed in 2011; the 3.5 mill levy was intended to be a bridge to 2014 with the district making a strategic decision to utilize the district’s cash balance to assist with revenue during the economic recession. Because of conservative fiscal management, that promise made in 2011 was kept.

This 5.6 mill levy would allow the district to rebuild the cash reserve we were forced to utilize during the recession, and add additional revenue to continue to make strides in providing advanced academic opportunities for our students – money the district would use to further expand the excellent education provided to students – especially in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math.

In the upcoming months, we will continue to share additional information on the May operating levy via the district website (www.lovelandschools.org), through community forums and the media. Loveland Initiative thanks community for success of Christmas Toy Store

On December 20, The Loveland Initiative held its 16th Annual Christmas Toy Store program. We received overwhelming toys, gifts and monetary funds towards this program during the holiday season. This program served well over 200 children. Our goal was to make sure that we raised enough funds to offer two scholarships which assist a student to further his or her education. Thanks to our generous supporters we have succeeded in reaching that goal; and will award two scholarships to Loveland graduates in August of this year.

The Loveland Initiative is committed to making life better for families whose lives are affected by poverty. We feel that one of the ways to empower people is through education and this is the way to break the cycle of poverty.  With the assistance of our supporters, we have been able to make a positive impact on the lives of children and families in our community. Their generous support towards the organization has helped to continue its important work to achieve our mission; which is to educate and assist low-income children and their families.

In the Tigers’ latest victory over Goshen, Loveland snapped a four game skid. While the Goshen Warriors played like a relatively sloppy ball club: they scored a total of eight points in the first and fourth quarter, turned the ball over with careless passing, and were at a tremendous size disadvantage, the Loveland defensive effort was still impressive. This was a bright spot for Loveland lately as they have held their past three opponents to less than 40 points.

Other bright spots for the Tiger basketball team are Cole Cloud, who has averaged 19.7 points per game, and Jake Elfers who leads the ECC in field goal percentage.

tremendous improvement. He makes a little over a third of his shots which from beyond the arc, and is adept at making space to drain mid-range jumpers. In the game against Milford, Cloud even scored half of the Loveland’s overall points. Even when the Tigers were offensively struggling as a team, Cloud has kept Loveland competitive.

Elfers has been key as a physical presence on a relatively small Tiger basketball team. At 6’5 he is not among the largest centers in the ECC, but he has been been able make up his size with hustle and heart. He also brings experience this year as a senior since he has been on the varsity squad since he was a freshman.

The next home game for the Tigers is Saturday January 25th against Colerain.  The Cardinals are 3-10, but have won their past two games against Winton Woods and Princeton. Like Loveland, they are a smaller team, and this even match-up should make for an exciting game.

Ask me and I will have a very short list for you of folks I have met that best embody the

spirit and legacy of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King. Ask me for one name of Loveland area folks and the list gets to one folk, the late Judy Leever. Judy died in 2011, eighteen months after she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

I talked to her husband Bruce this morning and he told me of the bench that has just been placed to honor Judy along the Loveland Bike Trail just about a quarter mile north of the O'Bannon Creek bridge and Nisbet Park.

I immediately went to the river, I knew where the bench would be because Bruce described the location, "Near the whirlpool." This is my favorite spot on the river I have always lived along, and this spot is where I often go to write. It is the river bank spot where where I penned some of what I wrote about Judy in the days following her death. It is one small spot on the very long river that Judy spent so much of her life protecting.

About the Book "Be Good to Yourselves"

Letters from JUDY LEEVER

We plan to make copies of "Be Good To Yourselves" available to cancer centers and cancer support groups and doctors who have patients and their families who are struggling with the disease.

Soon after her death, Judy’s husband, Bruce, and her sons, Glenn, Will and Michael, set out to place Judy’s collected letters (about her cancer journey) in the hands of her bereaved family and her community of friends. Still in shock, the four sought a way to make Judy, in a sense, live again. Making this book was a difficult task that, in the most practical sense, helped each of them grieve, but the process also kept them bound together as the literally creative (if forever changed) family they are.

As Judy reached out to many people beyond her immediate circle, so too are her husband and sons wishing to share her gift of words with those who may be in need of comfort, inspiration or just a friendly honest voice in time of trouble.

Groups push for Voter Bill of Rights in Ohio

Black legislative leaders, clergy members and civil-rights advocates yesterday announced a statewide effort to amend the Ohio Constitution to ensure protections for Ohio voters.

The Voter Bill of Rights, supporters say, will prevent the erosion of voting rights by including those rights in the state constitution.

“We come to represent constituents, memberships, average citizens who have been crying out to protect voting rights,” Rep. Alicia Reece, a Cincinnati Democrat and president of the Ohio Legislative Black Caucus, told supporters at a lunchtime rally at Trinity Baptist Church on Columbus’ Near East Side.  Read on at the Columbus Dispatch...
