Greater Cincinnati’s vibrant nugget of Russian culture shines Saturday, September 6 during the St. George Russian Fest.
With pirozhki, folk music, and Russian dancers, all the senses will delight in the annual festival hosted by St. George Russian Orthodox Church. Homemade desserts, authentic Russian souvenirs, children’s games, art & crafts booths as well as Church tours will also be available.
This parish fund-raiser runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, September 6. After a two-year hiatus, the festival resumes in the community’s newly-built church and parish hall located at 118 N. Lebanon Rd., Loveland, OH 45150. Admission is free.
Dine on shashlik (Russian shish kebob) and golubtsi (meat-stuffed cabbage) along with a bowl of borscht (beet soup) and other homemade Russian delicacies. Finish up with some authentic Russian baked goods, featuring everything from blini (Russian crepes) to Napoleon and Russian Tea Cakes. Vodka, wine and beer will be served.
Musicians and dancers perform throughout the day. The “Mehas Ensemble” and the “Dmitrieva Duet” offer Eastern European folk music, both a cappella and with guitars. The parish youth will perform Russian folk dances, while “Zabava” shows off Georgian folk dancing. The “Haheu Ensemble” features pan flute and guitar with a Slavic sound.
The Russian Fest features a broad selection of authentic, hand-made Russian crafts and souvenirs, from dazzling lacquer boxes to the beloved, hand-painted, nesting wooden dolls, known as ‘matroshki’. Local artists, including Ivanka Lempitskiy and Barbara Pask, will display their goods on the parish front lawn. The parish bookstore offers a variety of Orthodox Christian music, literature and icons.
Kids will be entertained by a bouncy-house, face painting, hair braiding, nail painting and other children’s games. Tours of the church building will be held regularly; they will include a brief talk on Orthodox Christianity and the opportunity to ask questions of the parish priest.
Handicapped parking is available at the Church. Other parking is at Loveland Heights Church of Christ (1566 West Loveland Road) and on nearby side streets.
