Back in the Summer of 2010 the Loveland Community surrounded the Newbanks family during a time of need. Their son Ryan was diagnosed with Duchenes Muscular Dystrophy when he was 5 years old. As Ryan grew to become a teenager his needs required a change to their home's layout and new medical equipment.
The Loveland Community stepped in and helped the family complete the project. The Loveland High School football team, Mark Griesmer Construction, Turnbull Wahlert, Epiphany United Methodist Church, St. Columban Church, as well as members of Crossroads Community Church in Oakley, all chipped in manpower and resources.
It was during this volunteer project that Loveland High School alumni and former Football punter/kicker, Matt Eltringham struck up a friendship with Ryan. When Matt left to attend Hillsdale College that friendship continued. Eltringham is in his Senior year at Hillsdale
As a result of that relationship and the Hillsdale Football team's support of a national program called Coach for the Cure, the team adopted Ryan as a recruit, a friend, and a fan of the program.
On Saturday November 1, the Hillsdale College football team honored Ryan and his family at the Hillsdale College vs. Saginaw Valley football game. During the weekend festivities Ryan attended the team dinner, went to the Volleyball game, and led the team out the tunnel to midfield for the coin toss.
Ryan not only brought smiles to all the players, coaches and fans but he brought hope and encouragement to others who battle this illness. If you would like to know more about how to support Ryan and others who battle this disease please visit: http://coachtocuremd.org/.
