Are you an Upstander?

At the Loveland City School District we strive to develop a culture of kindness. Part of this initiative is articulated in the My Voice, My Choice program – a program that operates under the belief that we all have a voice, and we have to make a choice if we will promote kindness. We are lucky to have many dedicated people who help make this program possible in each of our schools. Every October the district kicks off a month-long kindness campaign using the My Voice, My Choice platform but with a unique theme. This year, our theme is “Be an Upstander.”

So, what is an Upstander?

It’s actually pretty simple. When they see something that is not right, or they know somebody needs help – they step in. They serve as an Upstander for others. We want our Tigers to know that we are here to care for other people – we care for their feelings, we care for how they are treated, and we care for them as a person. And, that’s what’s really important.

Our goal is help students know that we support their positive behavior. We also have speakers who come in and reinforce the idea of treating others with care and respect. This year Justin Bachman, a former Loveland student, came to talk to our middle and high school students. He focused on the importance of self worth, the impact of exclusion, being an Upstander and Living Loud – being proud of who you are and being true to yourself. We are glad that Justin could share his message with our students and help them make a difference for others.

The district makes a point to recognize students who have decided to be Upstanders in their schools. Now, we are preparing to share those stories with you, our Tiger Family. You will now see a Quick Link on our district website (www.lovelandschools.org) called My Voice, My Choice. This link will keep you informed about all of the ways the district is working to create a culture of kindness, and it will feature the Loveland Upstander students who we are so proud to congratulate. I encourage you to take the time to take a look at our My Voice, My Choice program; this is just one more way the Loveland City School District is Preparing Students for Tomorrow, Today.

LECC students get a lesson in safety from Officer Fred Barnes

 

Stranger Danger

 

Kindergarten and first grade students at Loveland Early Childhood Center (LECC) had a 'uniformed' teacher as Loveland Police Officer Fred Barnes, who also works for the district as a resource officer, presented a lesson on Stranger Danger.

“We thought Officer Barnes was the perfect person to teach the students about how to stay safe,” said Kyle Bush, LECC principal. “The fact is – our students need to be aware of how to react if they are ever approached by a stranger; the lesson is a very important one.”

The Stranger Danger presentation was an idea that developed out of LECC’s School Safety Committee.

The Loveland City School District invites all members of the community to attend the State of the Schools presentation Wednesday, Jan. 14, in the Loveland Middle School Auditorium.

The event will feature light refreshments and a performance by Loveland Elementary School’s Mallet Madness from 6:45 until 7 PM, with Superintendent Chad Hilliker presenting the keynote address promptly at 7 PM.

From the Polar Express to gingerbread construction – it’s creative learning, holiday style, at LECC

 

Signs for the Polar Express decorated the halls of Loveland Early Childhood Center (LECC) the days leading up to the Winter Break – as Kindergarten Teacher Lisa Schmidt joined creative forces with LECC teachers Jessica Ritz and Rebecca Eldred to turn holiday fun into important lessons. The teachers collaborated to plan activities that allowed students to learn about math and reading while visiting stations set up inside different classrooms on a “Polar Express” tour.

“In my room we discussed how to make hot chocolate, then developed that discussion into a writing project,” explained Schmidt. “We all sipped on the hot chocolate we made and enjoyed it to a reading of the book the Polar Express.”

Upstairs from Mrs. Schmidt’s room, LECC Teacher Shari Rush navigated a miniature construction project – the assembly of gingerbread houses – a two-week project that helped students understand important elements of reading and writing.

“First, we read many different versions of the story about the gingerbread man, and then we compared and contrasted story elements – characters, setting, plot, ending,” said Rush. “We also have been writing class letters and receiving letters from the gingerbread man who ran away from our room. He has been sending us "selfies" and clues from all over the building.

“In addition, to designing our gingerbread houses, we made blueprints of the structures we were going to make, and the students had to label their blueprints with the names of all the candies they wanted to use. Once the houses were finished we did some gingerbread house math and we counted and graphed the different types of candies we used comparing our results.”

“Learning is fun – it is a creative process,” said Schmidt. “And, ultimately that is what we want our students to experience.”

 

Don't trash your electronics - they can be recycled in Loveland

 

You are invited to bring your used electronics to LHS January 5 – 10

 

Loveland High School (LHS) in partnership with Cohen Recycling is setting up an electronics recycling event that will run from Monday, Jan. 5, through Friday, Jan. 9, during normal school business hours, with additional hours from noon until 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10.

This event is open to all community members with old electronics to recycle, and that includes anything with a cord (hair dryers, drills, blenders).

The electronics recycling program is part of the LHS Environmental Science Program, and is a student-initiated, student-run event designed to show the importance of recycling and reusing all appropriate materials – not just paper and plastic.

"I hope this drive will be able to show students the importance of recycling and saving the environment for many years to come," said LHS Environmental Science Student Emma Berryman.

Please note: There will be a $5 charge to recycle any television.

Customers with service on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday will not be affected by Christmas Day.  Waste and recycling service will not occur on Thursday, December 25, and collection will be delayed one day for the rest of the week following Christmas Day.

For example, if your trash would normally be picked up on Thursday of next week, then it will now be collected on Friday, while pick-up normally scheduled for Friday will be collected on Saturday. 

The same schedule will apply the week of December 29, 2014 – January 3, 2015 for New Year’s Day. The normal schedule will return beginning the week of January 5.

Olivia Frances honored with "“Best Pop Song” in Ohio in 2014

 

Past Hold On Talent Slam winner receives 2014 Ohio Music Award

 

Olivia Frances' song, “Back to Happiness” was recently chosen as the “Best Pop Song” in the 2014 Ohio Music Awards. She said, "I am humbled and honored to have won this award."

She decided to submit that particular song for consideration because it has always gotten a positive response from listeners. People seem to love the feel good, upbeat tone of the song and obviously the judges agree.

The Ohio Music Awards strive to celebrate the rich musical tradition in the State of Ohio. Each year, they award their “Best of” in numerous categories to show how music from different genres can be interwoven to tell a greater story about music in the State of Ohio.

Olivia said, “I am completely humbled and amazed by how this one song that I started writing on the front porch of my house in the summer, has blossomed into its own being. I am so grateful to receive this award and I’d like to thank my parents, family, and friends for their continuous support.”

Olivia is a member of the Nashville Singer-Songwriter Association – with chapters in Cleveland and Cincinnati – and firmly believes in their motto; “It all begins with a song.” She puts this into practice by continuing to write and create new material with the hope that another one of her songs will touch someone and help bring the world together through her music.

On Saturday, January 24, 2015, from 6 PM until mid-night, the Loveland Athletic Boosters will host their Sixth Annual Tiger Ball to raise money for student athletes in grades 7-12.  This fun night out will be held at Oasis Conference Center in Loveland and will include dinner, music, dancing, raffles, and a live and silent auction. You can bid on gift baskets, entertainment packages and more, and take a chance in the Black Diamond Candy Raffle to win a black and white diamond ring in sterling silver, (1-1/2 ct. t.w. valued at $1200). 

Last year the Boosters had record attendance and reached close to 500 participants.

Loveland Intervention Specialist Carol Huxhold awarded 2014 Kathe Shelby Leadership Award

 

Outstanding Special Education Leader in Ohio nominated for ‘teaching from the heart’

 

Loveland, Oh. - Loveland Middle School (LMS) Intervention Specialist Carol Huxhold was awarded the 2014 Kathe Shelby Leadership Award in a ceremony Tuesday, Oct. 14, at the Ohio Special Education Leadership Conference in Columbus.  

Huxhold’s nomination came from the parents of an LMS student who described Huxhold as follows, “To say Carol has been a Godsend would be no exaggeration. Simply stated, she personifies the definition of teaching from the heart. Carol is also the consummate professional, engages in research-based best practices and is committed to helping ALL students reach their full potential. Amazingly enough, that support does not end when the bell rings at the end of the day.”

“This is a distinguished honor within the Ohio special-education community, and speaks volumes to the dedication Carol has exhibited to helping all of her students to achieve at the highest levels possible,” said Eric Dool, director of student services. “While there are many qualities that make up an effective teacher, commitment to each student’s growth can be counted among the most important – going above and beyond to ensure that each student has the opportunity to successfully participate in his or her education; Carol has done this.”  

Named in honor of Kathe Shelby, the director of the Office for Exceptional Children from 2008 – 2011, the Kathe Shelby Leadership Award is presented yearly to an Outstanding Special Education Leader in Ohio.

 

 

Loveland Elementary School Runners Club turns three!

 

 

Around 80 students continued tradition of community health

 

Loveland, Oh. - The Loveland Elementary School (LES) Runners Club celebrated its annual final run for the fall season recently. This year, around 80 fourth-grade students met every Tuesday and Thursday through September and October to promote healthy living.

“I hope our participants are gaining a realization that running can be very satisfying and rewarding,” said LES Teacher Andrew Price, who also coordinates the Runner’s Club activities. “Many of our students – when thinking about running a 5K – probably think to themselves that they would never be able to run three miles. But, after coming to LES Runners Club for a couple of weeks they realize that six laps (the equivalent of three miles) is not as daunting as it first seemed.”

For the final run, runners were joined by teachers and parents; all dressed in their favorite Tiger spirit wear. Even though the fall season is complete – the hope is that the lesson learned is lifelong.

“We encourage our runners to do the annual Tiger Trot at Loveland Intermediate School every spring and for many of them it is their very first 5K race,” said Price. “They are so proud of themselves when they finish and I hope it translates into a lifelong love of running.”

 

 

Casey Smith named Hamilton County Recycling and Solid Waste District’s Student Recycler of the Year

Loveland, Oh. - Loveland High School (LHS) Senior Casey Smith has been named Hamilton County Recycling and Solid Waste District’s Student Recycler of the Year at a ceremony Thursday, Nov. 13.

“Casey has been an integral part of Loveland's recycling initiative for three years,” said LHS Environmental Science Teacher Tracy Burge. “He has been audacious, dauntless and intrepid in his approach to leading change.  He has proven his leadership, initiative, and ambition in his moxie. He has educated hundreds of students who have in turn educated their parents, scout groups, church groups and athletic teams. His impact on the Loveland community has been extraordinary.

“His passion and dedication to recycling and sustainability led him to develop a class that allowed him to implement recycling and composting in the intermediate and middle school cafeterias. Because of his extensive knowledge and experience in recycling, his management and education of student participants, and, his cooperation with staff and custodians, the intermediate and middle school cafeterias are now zero waste facilities.”

 

 

Chemistry comes alive at the Loveland Early Childhood Center

Loveland, Oh. - Loveland Early Childhood Center (LECC) first-grade students got a lesson in slimy science when COSI (Center of Science and Industry) brought its traveling science program “It’s Simply Chemistry” to Loveland Friday, Nov. 7.

“This was an innovative, interactive program designed to stimulate the imaginations of our students,” said LECC Principal Kyle Bush. “COSI allows our young Tigers to explore chemistry through simple experiments designed to introduce new science principles.” 

The day began with an assembly introducing the students to how chemistry impacts their everyday lives. COSI’s Chemistry Detective helped solve the mystery of the missing slime ingredients by identifying acids and bases, determining unknown substances, and decoding an invisible message. This fun and educational assembly was followed by hands-on activity sessions during which the students made their very own COSI Super Slime, created endothermic and exothermic reactions, and learned to identify unknown substances using chemistry.

“We sincerely appreciate our PTA for providing such a fun approach to science to our students,” said Bush. “COSI is certainly worth the investment.”

COSI is a hands-on science center located in Columbus, Ohio.

• William Rust (eighth grade), second chair baritone saxophone 

In addition, Armstrong and Karp were selected to play with the Honor Orchestra.

Meet Ellie. She is a student at Loveland Primary School; she is the youngest of my three children.

“Dad, do you know how big the government is?”

And, this is a typical question she will hit me with at dinner.

(Did I mention she is in second grade!)

That night at the dinner table, she was able to tell me the why to her question… because her teacher allowed her to explore books that Ellie found interesting. (Future politician? Time will tell.)

For me – when I was a second grader – it was text books, neat rows, raising my hand to speak (not that I did that often), the old movie projector, listening to lectures, completing workbook pages, taking tests, and a chalk board covered in dust… with a teacher at the head of the class giving instruction.

For Ellie the learning is more student-centered.

The practice Ellie’s teacher has implemented is part of a larger trend we are seeing in education. Education is evolving into a more student-centered environment with greater individual attention, and a personalization of the learning experience through technology. We are seeing the changes inside our Loveland classrooms, which trickle into surprising conversations with our students around the supper table.

As the educational leader of the district, I embrace the way learning is evolving. At Loveland, we will continue to shape a cooperative, purposeful learning experience for the students we serve. Teachers will spend time with smaller groups or individuals to help them grow at their own pace. And, technology will be used to enhance the educational opportunity both at school and at home.

It is a journey; we have not “arrived” at the destination… and – if we are doing it right – we never will.

This holiday season, I wish for you more time to spend around the dinner table with the ones you love – conversing, connecting, and yes – learning. And I leave you with this promise: At the Loveland City School District, the learning will never cease to evolve.

Christmas Break: Perfect time to prepare auditions for the Hold On Talent Slam

 

Loveland, Oh. - The Christmas break from school is the perfect time to practice and prepare auditions for the third, Hold On Talent Slam, coming March 7, 2015. Teens can showcase their performing art in the only local competition that offers cold hard cash, and plenty of it, just for the pure fun of guests witnessing the incredible talent that is the passion of area youth. In it's first two years, $7,000.00 was awarded in prize money. As in the past, first place winners will receive the top prize award of $1,000.00 and every contestant chosen to hit the big stage will receive a cash award.

Ricky Mulvey will return for his third year as emcee, and the talent will be judged by an expert panel of Eta-Omicron Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

Teens or their parents can inquirer about how to audition by emailing [email protected]. The audition deadline is Monday, February 9.
