Nancy Sullivan's studio will be open this Saturday, 4 until 10 PM, at the Loveland Artists Studios on Main. The collection of artists are celebrating Christmas. Nancy said, "There will be music and refreshments and lots of gift ideas."
As a child, Nancy always was interested in drawing. To keep her out of her folk’s hair they would hand her the comic page of the newspaper, a paper grocery bag and a pencil and she would be occupied for hours. Trying to draw Charlie Brown’s round head has evolved into many exhibitions, jurying art shows, and teaching in her own studio in Loveland, Ohio. Her paintings can be found in corporate and private collections from coast to coast.
Nancy has been a long standing active member of the historic Cincinnati Art Club, serving on the board several times and years ago she was also privileged to be a participant in “Reginald Grooms Circle”.
Nancy teaches classes Monday thru Thursday. She concentrates on technique and letting the water do the work.
Classes are two hours long and private or semi private. Nancy teaches children and adults.
Sessions are at 11AM and 2 PM. Supplies are included for beginning painters.

Loveland Magazine has often touted our river valley as a resort. My neighbor, Chris Springborn opened my eyes to this when he moved next door. When I first met him he said, "Because I wanted to be closer to the river to fly-fish. Loveland is like a resort."
What should have been so obvious, was not. I think because it all seems so familiar most of the time. Yet, it IS for those of us lucky enough to reside here, a retreat. Those of us who both live and work here, a 24-hours a day retreat. Those who call Loveland home and work someplace else, get to come home every night to a resort. There is no other community in the tri-state, where life can be so playful; with parks, nature centers, conservation districts, a 75-mile long biking, walking, and running trail. We have a nationally protected scenic river, running through our HEART where we can swim, fish like Chris, kayak, canoe, or just sit, ponder and write poetry.
Historic Downtown, into the West Loveland Historic District is replete with self-improvement amenities: art studios and art lessons, therapists and counselors to help you grow, thrive, and bloom. Within, are yoga studios, quilter studios and quilting lessons, a music academy, antiques and collectibles, fitness centers, dance and tumbling lessons, pottery turners and lessons, bike buying and rentals, and running shoe shopping,
Or, on the "Scenic" Little Miami, one can take an intermission and capture photos like Robert Montgomery, "...because it calms me down."
No wonder we have traffic problems and squabbles over so called progress or development, when so many "outsiders" flock here in their own spare time... to enjoy us, to take recess.
Perhaps no one, has captured our beauty, more beautifully than Loveland High School Senior, Robert Montgomery, through the lens of his cell phone. Robert said about his photo "Backroads", "I was just bored one day an I just decided to walk down to Old Loveland and take Pictures."
Robert said about our resort and his photography:
I'm pretty much into nature, fishing, and taking pictures. When I moved to Loveland when I was a little kid, I just fell in love. I just love my hometown its a gorgeous place. And the reason why I like photography is because it calms me down. I just love listening to the nature and what it provides for me.
I really do hope Robert likes to take walks to downtown in the snow and shows us his winter-wonderland.
And, I really, really, do hope that Spring hurries so Robert can take us to the places in his resort when it blooms.
Robert said, "I sure wish that I had a better camera, because I love to take pictures." Hey Loveland Magazine readers... that sounds like a challenge! Any thoughts about that - send me a Email.

The Cincinnati Zoo offers a real-life classroom for LIS students
The entire fifth grade class at Loveland Intermediate School (LIS) stepped outside the classroom to learn about animals Friday, Oct. 31; the class enjoyed a field trip to the Cincinnati Zoo!
“This was a wonderful opportunity to bring classroom studies to life for our students,” said LIS Principal Garth Carlier. “It is one thing to read about a tiger, but quite another to watch one in action. We are so fortunate to be able to provide these types of experiences for our students.”

LECC, LPS and LES students walk a combined total of 710 miles for Walk-A-Thon fundraiser
Loveland, Oh. - The Loveland Elementary Parent Teacher Association (LEPTA) raised approximately $45,000 through a Walk-A-Thon fundraiser that included participation of all Loveland Early Childhood Center (LECC), Loveland Primary School (LPS) and Loveland Elementary School (LES) students. The money raised will provide additional learning opportunities through programs such as COSI on Wheels, Science Day and field trips.
“There is no question that these LEPTA-funded programs help strengthen and add variety to our existing academic programs,” said Kyle Bush, LECC principal.
“We have sincere appreciation for all our parents and community do to help our school,” said LES Principal Jennifer Forren.
The Walk-A-Thon kicked off Thursday, Oct. 16 and ended Tuesday, Oct. 21 with a different day designated for participation at each building. Students walked a combined total of 710 miles. Loveland businesses supported the Walk-A-Thon by providing more than 100 prizes to use in a raffle that was designed to work as an incentive for students to raise money.
"When the LEPTA voted to change the fall fundraiser to a walk-a-thon we had no idea what to expect,” said LEPTA Walk-A-Thon Co-chair Amy Friday. “We were overwhelmed by the amount of support that we received from our students, parents, teachers, principals and community. The walks were so fun for our students, and I believe the students really felt like they were doing something to help our schools as well."
“The success of this Walk-A-Thon was a testament to the strong partnership between our district and our community,” said Kevin Fancher, LPS principal.

Beauty, Art, Community, and the Divine. Each a unique expression of the hopeful joy within the Christmas story.
In 1944 Grailville’s founder, Lydwine Van Kersbergen, focused on how exquisite pieces of art impacted the daily life and the prayer life of the women living at Grailville for the Year School. From this sprang the liturgical art program and the crèche became a Grailville tradition.
Selected scenes from the Grailville International Crèche Collection are now on display at the Greater Loveland Historical Society Museum, 201 Riverside Drive, Loveland, OH. The Museum is open 1-4pm Saturdays and Sundays; admission is free but a $5 donation is suggested.

Morrow, Oh. - In their first year doing Lego Robotics, four Little Miami Intermediate School students claimed the Robot Design Award at the Springboro regional tournament Nov. 15, and fared well enough to qualify for the upcoming district championships.
Sixth grader Rhett Bendure and fifth graders Kyle Evers Smith, Aaron Horak and Jaxon Craig make up Team MPI (Masters of Programming Insanity). At the Springboro event, competing against 11 other teams in the FIRST Lego League, they came in second in the Robotics Performance portion of the competition. Their design award was one of four major awards given out.
To compete in the regional event in Springboro, Team MPI had to complete a research project and a team build, and also program a EV3 Lego Mindstorms robot. The robot had to autonomously complete a number of tasks on a competition table in a 2.5-minute robot round. During the tournament, the team met with three different judge panels: 1) judges who evaluated their robot design, programming, and problem-solving strategies; 2) judges who looked at their research project, solution and outreach; and 3) judges who evaluated how well the group functioned as a team, and how well they brought the FLL core values to their local community. Judges used a national set of rubrics to help them determine which teams received awards.
In the Robot Design, Research Project, and Core Values, Team MPI received scores of Accomplished/Exemplary with specific strengths called out in Teamwork, Programming, Strategy & Innovation, and Research. In selecting Team MPI as the recipient of the Robot Design award, judges looked for a team whose strategies for solving missions and whose process for understanding and documenting the design process stand out. Judges also evaluated the robot¹s mechanical design, degree of innovation and programming effectiveness to assess overall design quality.
Team MPI¹s robot, named ³JARK,² was a compact, simplistic design built small to maneuver around a very tightly packed robot board, with the tea relying on NASCAR-type rapid Base Attachment changes to accomplish their targeted missions. This strategy allowed the robot to perform flawlessly in the third round of the competition and to place second overall in total points.
The district championships are at iSPACE in Cincinnati on Jan. 10.

For almost 30 years, U.S. PIRG Education Fund has conducted an annual survey of toy safety, which has led to an estimated 150 recalls and other regulatory actions over the years, and has helped educate the public and policymakers on the need for continued action to protect the health and wellbeing of children.
Among the toys surveyed this year, we found numerous choking hazards and five toys with concentrations of toxics exceeding federal standards. In addition to reporting on potentially hazardous products found in stores in 2014, this installment of the report describes the potential hazards in toys and children’s products.
The continued presence of these hazards in toys highlights the need for constant vigilance on the part of government agencies and the public to ensure that children do not end up playing with unsafe toys. Read on...

5th Annual Raku Firing and Ornament Painting
Loveland, Ohio - Last year Whistle Stop ClayWorks offered their first commemorative ornament in a train ornament series. “We introduce a new ornament each December during the Christmas in Loveland celebration. The train series, which celebrates Loveland’s rich railway
history, is fun for both adults and children to collect“, said Kay Bolin O’Grady, co-owner. “2013 featured the train engine. This year we will have the boxcar available and next year’s ornament will be the caboose.”
Also, ClayWorks started the "glaze your own" complimentary handmade ornament in 2010 during their first year of operation. The first year 150 ornaments were distributed to patrons, that number will increase to 700 ornaments for 2014.
“Please come and take part in the painting, fire and fun. You can paint a free ornament, watch the fiery action while warming up at the blazing bonfire, or relax inside the studio and gallery, said Bolin O’Grady. “Remember to come early as there are a limited number of ornaments, and when they’re gone, they’re gone.” She recommends you come between 3:30 and 5:30 PM to glaze your ornament and insure its spot in the kiln.”
Tim O’Grady, co-owner of ClayWorks, said, “Raku is a unique rapid and spontaneous method of glazing and firing clay which was created in Japan in the 16th century.” The ceramic work is quickly heated to 1820°F in about 45 minutes, removed glowing-red with tongs and placed in a barrel of combustibles such as paper or sawdust. “The pieces are then quenched in water and cleaned to expose the beautiful results of the process. Who can resist seeing this first hand?”, said Tim O’Grady
“There will also be plenty of one of kind handmade gifts, by local clay artists, in the gallery and gift certificates are also available for the budding artist on your list, “ said Kay Bolin O’Grady.
For more information, call 513-683-CLAY (2529) or visit website .
Christmas in Loveland is Saturday, December 13th, 4 until 9 PM and the estimated times for unloading the kilns are: 5:30, 6:00, 6:30, 7:00, 7:30 and 8:00 PM.

STATE FIRE MARSHAL URGES OHIOANS
TO DECORATE SAFELY FOR HOLIDAYS
Make Sure This Holiday Season is a Safe and Festive Celebration
Many of us will be decorating our homes for the holidays, and State Fire Marshal Larry Flowers wants to offer Ohioans some tips that can help keep families throughout the state safe during this time of the year.
“Used properly, these can be important family traditions. Make sure the decorations you put up in your home are fire safe and properly hooked up,” says State Fire Marshal Larry Flowers. “While Christmas tree fires are not common, when they occur, they often become deadly.”
Marshal Flowers and the U.S. Fire Administration offer the following tips:
Decoration Safety
Remember: Ohioans are encouraged to have a working smoke alarm installed on every level of the home and in each bedroom or sleeping area. Also, practice your escape plans twice a year. Each member of the household should know two ways out of your home. Make sure guests are aware of the escape plan and the location of any fire extinguishers in case there is an emergency.

Far from being one more task that there is no hope of completing, enhancing your children’s self-esteem can happen continuously just from your style of interacting with them. In other words, putting a little twist on the conversations you’re already having can build your children’s confidence in themselves.
Here are three powerful ways you can do it — in as little as 90 seconds: Read on...

It was a steady stream of students who braved the cold morning temps, walking from the Loveland Intermediate School (LIS) and Loveland Middle School (LMS) campus down Lebanon Road to Loveland’s LIFE Food Pantry to participate in the Pass-it-On Food Drive Friday, Nov. 21. According to Pass-it-On organizers, the Tiger Family – including LMS, LIS, Loveland Elementary School, Loveland Primary School and Loveland Early Childhood Center – collected a total of 4,258 food items – exceeding the request for 3,700.
“Loveland Schools has partnered with the LIFE Food Pantry for 14 years collecting over 32,400 food items through the Pass-it-On Food Drive,” said Karen Burke, LIFE Food Pantry drive organizer. “This year 198 Loveland families in need will receive two holiday food baskets! This would not be possible without the kindness and generosity of the staff, students and parents of the Loveland City School District.”

The holiday season is here, and State Fire Marshal Larry Flowers wants to remind Ohioans of some safety tips that can help during this time of the year. Many of us will be cooking for family and guests, and Thanksgiving Day can increase the likelihood of such a fire.
“Cooking is the leading cause of all fires in Ohio and the United States. The biggest problem is unattended fires,” said Flowers. “Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking. If no one is watching, things can get out of control fast.
Flowers offers the following tips:
Cooking Safety
In addition, Flowers encourages Ohioans to have a working smoke alarm installed on every level of the home and in each bedroom or sleeping area. Each member of the household should know two ways out of your home and practice those fire escape plans twice a year. Guests should be aware of the escape plan and the location of any fire extinguishers in case there is an emergency.

The Regional Storm Water Collaborative, also known as Save Local Waters, is seeking local artists to put their stamp on rain barrels for the 3rd Annual Rain Barrel Art Event. Through Jan. 20, artists can submit their artwork at www.savelocalwaters.org. The top 50 entries will receive a rain barrel on which to create their art.
Save Local Waters created the Rain Barrel Art Project to promote the use of rain barrels throughout the Ohio River Valley via an entertaining, yet educational medium. Rain barrels continue to grow in popularity across the country but they can often be dull in appearance. John McManus, Administrator for the Clermont Soil & Water Conservation District and a member of Save Local Waters, said, “People are sometimes hesitant to use rain barrels because of their looks. Save Local Waters believes that producing beautifully painted rain barrels will make them more desirable and naturally increase interest in their use.”
